Emergency and Rescue Procedure in Confined Space


Emergency and rescue procedure is an important procedures to be establish before carrying out any work. There are criterias which must be taken into consideration in generating the mentioned procedures;

  • Shape and size of confined space
  • Nature of job to be carried out
  • Obstacles within the confined space
  • Size and position of point for entry and exit the confined space
  • Number of persons occupying within the confined space and standby outside the confined space.  



Provision for Rescue Equipment


In an emergency and rescue procedures, there is a provision for rescue equipment. All rescue equipment must be made available and sufficient for rescue activity. The rescue equipment must be inspected all the time to ensure that it can be readily use without any defect and function failures. The basic equipment include:
  • Self breathing apparatus; 
  • Suitable reviving apparatus; 
  • Tripod;
  • Life line / Rope;
  • Stretcher
  • Safety harness; 
  • Rescue belt;
  • Carabiners and pulleys
  • First Aid
  • Walkie talkie for alerting persons standby outside the confined space.
The use of these rescue equipment varies based on the emergency and rescue procedure in various sites and work activity. Some may need the use of tripod, for example rescuing a person in tank which have only one manhole on top.

Confined Space Rescuer



In Industry Code of Practice in Confined Space 2010, rescuer is defined as person or group who have:
  • Been provided proper training in use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Been provided proper training in using the rescue equipment
  • Been provided training in First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Attended course on rescue and emergency service conducted and certified by Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA)
  • Attended training as Authorised Entrant
  • Practice confined space rescue at least once in 12 months
  • Certified physically and mentally fit by Occupational Heath Doctor (OHD)
